Resthouses are an old tradition in Ceylon. The roads are so dangerous that there is one every fifteen miles. You can drive in to relax, have a drink or lunch or get a room for the night. – Ondaatje
Ondaatje is wonderful at creating rich scenes with few sentences. For me, the passage about the resthouses his father visited evoked images of rattan chairs, beautiful fabrics, broad dark green plants all around, and mixed indoor/outdoor spaces.
Here is the design board I put together for my Ceylon resthouse!
The living room used to belong to David Bowie while the bedroom on the bottom row is from one of Calvin Klein’s houses. Find the outdoor shower along with others here, one bedroom along with more tropical ideas here, the table settings are here. The foyer is part of a pretty cool house in Mexico, and the space with the reflection pool is from a Moroccan house. I think they were pretty fun links to browse through, and I hope you will think so too 🙂
Manhattan Beach is about 20 miles south of the Los Angeles Airport. When I visited Kimberly last month, this was the first place I went after picking up my car rental. I spent the morning walking along the boardwalk, peeking into the little shops along the streets, and taking some photos with my new camera!
Manhattan Beach’s City Motto is “Sun, Sand, Sea” which just about sums it up perfectly. There are volley ball courts all along the beach, mountain ranges on the horizon, and a lot of surfers hanging around. I thought it would be kind of silly to go from Manhattan, New York to Manhattan Beach, California, but I am so glad I did.
The drive along the Pacific Coast was absolutely breathtaking. I didn’t even mind being stuck in the famous California traffic, because it gave me time to take in the sights. I saw a beautiful white heron flying along the road, which was really neat! I will definitely go to Manhattan Beach again next time I’m in Los Angeles.
If you’re in the area, I would recommend the following:
Have you been before? Where should I go next time?
Hi Everyone, I’ll be going to Los Angeles to hang out with Kimberly for almost a whole week! We will be taking in some sights, living out our Masterchef dreams, and watching some questionable movies.
I haven’t really talked about anything beyond books and the occasional movie on this blog, but I think I might try sharing more about my daily activities, what do you think?
Since I will be on a plane tomorrow, I thought I’d share some links today to tide you over until the next This Week in Review.
That’s all for now, I’m excited to share my adventures with you when I get back! I hope you stay warm, drink a lot of coffee, and snuggle up with a good book or television show this weekend.
